100 Illegal Immigrants Including Unaccompanied Children Found in Abandoned Big Rig
Laredo, TX – More than 100 illegal immigrants including five unaccompanied children were discovered by Texas authorities in an abandoned big rig last week.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, August 28.
The Laredo Police Department (LPD) requested assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) after finding a tractor-trailer near the corner of Bob Bullock Loop and Crepusculo Drive in Laredo.
CBP said agents opened the trailer and found more than 100 illegal migrants including five unaccompanied children inside.
The adults were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.
The children were from Mexico and Honduras.
“The Laredo Sector Border Patrol cannot stress enough the dangers and risks that undocumented individuals, especially unaccompanied minors, place themselves in when commencing their illegal journey into the United States,” CBP said in a release. “Without a legal guardian, these minors subject themselves to human smugglers who place them in increased danger during the high temperatures of summer and will abandon them at the first sign of danger in remote areas.”
The whereabouts of trucker involved in the smuggling attempt are not known at this time.
The following day, CBP also responded to a similar incident when local authorities discovered a refrigerated trailer on fire along Highway 59 about 18 east of Laredo.
After arriving to the scene to find a charred trailer, a total of 64 illegal migrants were also found nearby hiding in the brush.
Meanwhile, the trucker who had smuggled them was nowhere to be found.
