14-Year-Old Girl Struck And Killed By Semi While Crossing The Street
Los Angeles, California – A 14-year-old girl has died and her 12-year-old sister is in critical condition after they were struck by a semi-truck Thursday morning in the Historic South-Central neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the two young girls were attempting to cross a street near a middle school just before 8 a.m. when the truck turned northbound onto Broadway Place from 37th Street and ran over them.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and transported both girls to a nearby hospital where the 14-year-old succumbed to her injuries. According to a report from KTLA, the 12-year-old is said to be in “grave” condition at this time.
Investigators said the semi ran over the girls and continued on until a motorist waved the semi-driver down.
According to LAPD Detective Moses Castillo, the truck driver said he felt a “bump” but did not know what it was and never saw the girls.
The driver, whose identity has not been released, was described as “crying” and “distraught” upon learning of what had transpired. Police said he was cooperating fully with investigators.
Further, detectives said alcohol and drugs do not appear to have contributed to the accident. Castillo indicated investigators would be reviewing the driver’s cell phone data to determine if he was distracted at the time of the crash.
However, Castillo indicated he did not suspect distracted driving was a contributing factor to the fatal accident.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims and would only described them as “Hispanic juvenile sisters.”
Castillo told KTLA, “This could have been anyone. This is not a crime, this is an accident.”
