15 Big Rigs Reportedly Involved in Pileup Along West Virginia Interstate

Falling Waters, WV – A chain reaction crash involving at least ten big rigs shut down a portion of Interstate 81 for hours on Thursday night into Friday morning.

According to Fire officials from Washington County, MD, the first of multiple chain reaction accidents occurred at approximately 7:54 p.m. along northbound I-81 near the West Virginia/Maryland border.

A series of additional crashes along the icy roadway led to a pileup of as many as 15 tractor-trailers, investigators said.

Maryland State Police responded to the scene in addition to a team of eleven heavy duty tow trucks.

A stretch of both northbound and southbound lanes along I-81 were closed as emergency crews worked through the night and into the morning hours to clear the scene.

After approximately six hours all lanes were reopened, officials said.

Thankfully, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.

The slick and icy road conditions along with speed were cited as what led to the pileup.
