58 People Discovered in Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust, U.S. Trucker Arrested

Laredo, TX – A trucker was arrested last week after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials discovered nearly five dozen individuals being smuggled across the southern border by big rig.

According to CBP, the human smuggling bust occurred on Friday, May 29 at the checkpoint on Interstate 35.

A red tractor hauling a white trailer approached the I-35 checkpoint north of Laredo during the evening hours.

As agents conducted an immigration inspection of the driver, a Service K-9 alerted.

Agents opened the trailer and discovered 58 individuals, all illegally present in the U.S., CBP reported.

The countries of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras were each represented, officials said.

No one required immediate medical attention.

The individuals and the driver, a U.S. Citizen, were taken into custody pending further investigation.

Both the tractor and trailer were seized by CBP.

In a separate incident last week, a truck driver from Mexico was arrested after authorities say he attempted to smuggle a dozen people into the U.S. by big rig.
