66 People Caught In Big Rig Smuggling Operation, Trucker In Custody
Laredo, Texas – A truck driver who is a legal U.S. citizen was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) on Monday, April 29, after attempting to smuggle 66 individuals, including 2 juveniles, into the country.
According to a recent release from CBP, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents made the discovery of 66 people inside the trailer of a big rig at the immigration checkpoint on Interstate Highway 35 north of Laredo, Texas, shortly before midnight.
CBP said agents encountered a tractor-trailer in the primary inspection area and a Border Patrol canine was alerted to the odor of concealed narcotics and/or humans in the vehicle.
The driver was then instructed to move the vehicle to the secondary inspection area where further inspection revealed a total of 66 individuals including two juveniles locked inside the trailer.
Record checks on the individuals determined they were nationals of Ecuador, Guatemala, and Mexico with no legal right to be in the United States, according to officials.
CBP said all individuals appeared to be in good health and did not require medical attention.
Border Patrol seized the vehicle and took all persons into custody, including the driver, who was not identified.
In its release, CBP continued to warn against the dangers of people crossing illegally into the United States through dangerous environmental conditions.
