87-Year-Old Wrong Way Driver Perishes In Head-On Collision With Big Rig

Summit County, Ohio – An 87-year-old motorist sadly perished in a head-on collision with a big rig early Wednesday morning on Interstate 77 in Green.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, who has not yet been identified, was traveling northbound in a 2005 Buick LeSabre in the southbound lanes at approximately 3 a.m. He then struck a tractor-trailer head-on between the Massillon Road and Arlington Road exits.

Investigators said the motorist “immediately” collided with the big rig after he mistakenly turned onto the exit ramp at Massillon Road and began driving the wrong way on the interstate. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

A report from News 5 Cleveland indicated the man was from Green. Gary Guenther, an investigator for the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, said the man’s name is being withheld at this time pending positive identification and notification of the victim’s family.

The truck driver was uninjured. Officials are unsure why the motorist was driving the wrong way. It is also unknown at this time if alcohol or drug impairment was a factor.
