Big Rig Plows Through Police Squad Car

Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin – A truck driver says he hit a patch of ice before plowing into an Ashwaubenon Public Safety officer’s squad car on Monday.

The crash happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. at the traffic light on Ashland Avenue. Dash cam video from a police squad car following behind the accident shows the traffic light turn green and a police squad car begin to navigate through the intersection. As it does a tractor-trailer smashes into the officer’s vehicle.

Officials say the truck driver said he was unable to stop because he slid through a patch of ice. The driver of the big rig was cited for operating too fast for the conditions.

Capt. Jody Crocker of Ashwaubenon Public Safety said, “When you’re looking at the video it does appear that the truck was moving quite fast. The main thing there is the fact he had a red light. He should have been driving under the conditions where he’d be able to stop as that light was turning red.”

“There should be no reason any vehicle can’t stop for a red light, can’t slow down and yield at the yellow,” said Crocker.

The officer miraculously was uninjured in the side impact crash.

Incredibly, the officer whose squad car was struck was uninjured. The crash closed a section of Ashland Avenue for about 2 1/2 hours.

The video of the crash has now gone viral. WATCH it below.
