Big Rig Plows Two Vehicles Killing Five People, Seriously Injuring Five More

Tonopah, AZ – Five people are confirmed dead and five more are hospitalized after a big rig rear-ended two passenger vehicles along an Arizona interstate on Friday.

The deadly accident occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 near mile post 82.


According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound failed to slow and collided into the rear of a Nissan Altima with five people inside.

“The force of the impact split the Nissan passenger vehicle in half,” AZDPS stated in a release.

Witnesses said the Nissan quickly burst into flames.

All five people traveling inside the Altima were pronounced dead on the scene.

Their identities have not yet been released.

After plowing the Altima, the tractor-trailer continued on and slammed into the back of a white SUV occupied by a woman and her four children, AZDPS informed.

The woman and her children were transported to nearby hospitals with serious injuries.


An update on their conditions has not yet been provided.

The trucker, whose identity has also not yet been released, was uninjured.

AZDPS indicated an investigation into the tragic incident remains ongoing.
