Big Rig Plunges Off Of Overpass After Swerving To Avoid 4-Wheeler
Byram Township, New Jersey - New Jersey State Police say a big rig swerved to avoid a motorist and drove off of an overpass plunging onto the road below.
The accident happened at approximately 10:20 p.m. on Friday on eastbound Route 80 near mile marker 22.9 in Byram. When police arrived on scene they discovered a tractor-trailer had driven off of the overpass and sustained significant damage to the tractor.
Sgt. Jeffrey Flynn reported that the driver of the big rig attempted to avoid colliding with a Toyota Corolla which was stopped in the center lane of Route 80. The semi then ran through a guardrail on the overpass and crashed onto Waterloo Road below.
Emergency crews responding to the scene included the Byram Township and Budd Lake Fire Departments. Sussex County Hazmat were also requested to the scene due to a fuel and oil spill from the tractor trailer.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as Anthony Morlock, 62, of Coloma, Mich., and his passenger, Matthew Emerick, 59, of Kalamazoo, Mich., both sustained non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Corolla, whose name has not been disclosed by authorities, was not injured. Police have not yet released any findings as to why the motorist was in the middle of the road. The investigation is ongoing.
