Dozens of People Discovered in Alleged Big Rig Human Smuggling Operation
Laredo, TX – A truck driver was arrested and charged with 41 counts of human smuggling after authorities discovered dozens of illegal immigrants concealed inside of a refrigerated trailer last week.
On Friday, September 20 at approximately 10:48 p.m. Laredo Police Department (LPD) officers approached a tractor-trailer parked along the side of the road at 8410 Tejas Loop.
Investigators encountered the truck’s driver, 37-year-old Hector Hernandez Trejo.
According to the LPD, officers searched the big rig and then discovered 41 people hidden inside the refrigerated trailer.
Authorities say each of the occupants was in “relatively good condition” and did not require medical attention.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents were called to the scene and took each person allegedly being smuggled into custody.
Trejo was subsequently arrested and charged with 39 counts of smuggling of persons and 2 counts of smuggling of persons under the age of 18.
According to Webb County Jail records, Trejo was released on bond on Saturday, September 21.
