Dozens of People Discovered in Deadly Hot Semi-Trailer, Trucker and Passenger Arrested
Laredo, TX – A trucker and passenger were each arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Monday in a big rig human smuggling bust.
The failed human smuggling attempt occurred on during the evening hours when a tractor hauling a white trailer approached the U.S. Highway 83 checkpoint in north Laredo.
CBP reports that during an immigration inspection of the driver and passenger, both U.S. citizens, the driver readily admitted that there were people inside the trailer.
Upon opening the trailer, agents found 35 individuals who were illegally in the United States from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
According to agents, the incident could have resulted in serious health consequences for those being smuggled.
At the time the individuals were discovered, the inside trailer temperature was recorded at 126.1 degrees Fahrenheit.
All were evaluated and offered medical attention by a Border Patrol emergency medical technician, CBP said.
All subjects were placed under arrest, including the U.S. citizen driver and passenger, pending further investigation by Homeland Security Investigations Special Agents.
Last week, agents from the Tucson sector arrested two U.S. teenagers attempting to smuggle people 22 people – including juveniles – by big rig.

As temperatures rise along the U.S. Southern border, CBP warns lives could be lost due to the disregard of human smugglers.
“Alien smuggling and human trafficking are a lucrative business conducted with no regard for human life,” CBP said in a statement.
