Elderly Woman Walks Into Path of Big Rig Leading to Fatal Scene Near Shopping Center
Poway, CA – An elderly woman was killed this week when she walked into the path of a big rig and was dragged before being run over.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDCSD), the accident took place on Wednesday, March 3, just after 9:30 a.m.
A trucker operating a Freightliner semi-truck owned by Mondovi-WI based Marten Transport was traveling on a delivery access road near a Poway shopping center.
The trucker had just completed a delivery to the Michael’s inside the Poway Plaza, located at 13301 Poway Road, at the time of the accident, Sgt. Dave Toner with SDCSD told Transportation Nation Network (TNN).
A preliminary investigation revealed the woman had been walking on a sidewalk by the access road and, for unknown reasons, stepped “into” the big rig.
“It looks like she stepped off the sidewalk and walked into the [driver’s side of the] truck,” Sgt. Toner stated.
She was dragged approximately 50 feet before the truck eventually ran over her.
According to Toner, the driver — whose identity has not been released — was unaware he had struck anybody until he “felt a little bump.”
At that time, the driver exited the rig to discover the tragic and gruesome scene.
Police were called and the woman was pronounced deceased.
The driver stayed at the scene “for quite a while” following the accident.
Toner said he and the trucking company were fully cooperative.
While officials did not release the name of the victim, friends on social media have identified her as a woman named “Deli.”
Comments on social media groups from the community of Poway indicate Deli was 81 years old.
According to a GoFundMe set up following the accident, she was walking to the grocery store at the time of the deadly incident.
The fundraiser is seeking $5,000 for funeral expenses.
As of publishing, it has raised $1,610.
The investigation is ongoing, but Toner confirmed alcohol and distracted driving are not factors in the incident and it appears to be a tragic accident.
No charges have been filed against the trucker and none are expected.
