Feds Plan to Distribute 800,000 Masks to Truckers at More Than 35 Locations

Washington D.C. – After weeks and weeks of pleading with government officials to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to truckers, hundreds of thousands of masks will soon be made available free of charge.

According to the Owner Operator Independent Driver’s Association (OOIDA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are joining forces to distribute 800,000 masks at more than 35 locations throughout the nation.

As truckers continue to travel in and out of known hot spots for COVID-19, many drivers have sounded off on social media specifically about this issue.

Also in recent weeks, several trucking groups, including OOIDA, have written to President Donald Trump urging the Federal government to provide PPE to truck drivers.

“Right now, professional drivers are busting their butts to care for the nation,” Todd Spencer, OOIDA’s CEO, wrote to Mr. Trump. “Their hard work and personal sacrifice should not include their health – or even their lives – if at all possible or preventable. We need a plan for them. We need help. Do it.”

In an April 22 letter to President Trump, the Small Business in Transportation Coalition (SBTC) called out the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for not already providing PPE to truckers.

“Truckers are traveling around the country without access to masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer,” the SBTC wrote. “With an operational budget of $665 million for fiscal year 2019, surely the FMCSA has funding available in its budget to make this a reality in accordance with the National Transportation Policy to keep the supply chain intact. America can do so much more for truckers than just #ThankATrucker.”
