Flatbed Trucker Parked Along Shoulder Questioned After Motorist Dies In Collision
Fairfax County, Virginia – A 35-year-old truck driver from Iowa is under investigation after a motorist lost her life when she slammed into the back of his flatbed tractor-trailer on Tuesday morning along I-66.
Virginia State Police (VSP) said the accident happened at approximately 1:55 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-66 near the 52 mile marker in Fairfax County.
Investigators said the tractor-trailer was parked along the right shoulder and the truck driver was asleep in his cab when a female motorist, who has now been identified as Randi L. Cockerille, 25, of Sterling, VA, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, and slammed into the back of the trailer.
The collision sparked a small fire, according to VSP.
Cockerille was pronounced dead on the scene. The trucker driver reported no injuries.

Traffic was backed up along eastbound I-66 until about noon on Tuesday.
It is unclear what led to the crash and if the big rig was disabled.
However, VSP said the tractor-trailer lights were not on at the time of the crash.
Many questions about this case remain unanswered as police say their investigation is ongoing.
