Hit-And-Run 4-Wheeler Sideswipes Semi Pulling Tandems Causing Fiery Crash
Metairie, Louisiana – A 4-wheeler sideswiped a semi hauling tandems Wednesday morning along I-10 causing the truck to crash and quickly catch fire.
Police say they are still looking for the silver-colored Mercury Grand Marquis or Ford Crown Victoria suspected of sideswiping the truck along I-10 near the Veterans Memorial Boulevard exit. The truck driver, who was hauling paint products, lost control of the rig and overturned.
The second of the two trailers tumbled over the elevated section of the highway, into the grass below. The paint products inside quickly caught fire and grew into an intense blaze in only a few minutes.
Authorities shut down I-10 and northbound Interstate 310 in response. Traffic was backed up for 6 miles as the State Police’s HazMat team, along with other agencies, were dispatched to clear the scene.
A spokesman for Troop B of the Louisiana State Police, Melissa Matey, said the truck driver sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As for the driver of the 4-wheeler, Matey said he continued driving along I-10 East. Officials do not have a license number but asked citizens to be on the lookout for a silver-colored Mercury Grand Marquis or Ford Crown Victoria with left front or left side damage.
The Louisiana State Police provided these images from the scene.
