Industry-Celebrated Trucker Gets 50 Years in Prison For Child Porn Crimes

San Antonio, TX – A trucker well-known in the trucking industry has been sentenced to serve five decades in prison for child pornography crimes.

According to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), 63-year-old Michael Dewayne Sheeds, of Bandera, TX, was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison followed by 20 years of supervised release for the production and possession of child pornography.

Sheeds was arrested in Laredo, TX, on January 7, 2019, on an arrest warrant from Bandera County Sheriff’s Office.

DOJ prosecutors said forensic data extracted from a Samsung Galaxy phone seized from Sheeds contained “images and videos depicting the sexual assault of two female children, including child abuse images and videos.”

On January 6, 2020, Sheeds pleaded guilty to one count of production of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

He has remained in custody since that time.

In addition to the prison term, Sheeds was ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution to each of the two victims and pay two $5,000 assessments per the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.

“The defendant’s abuse forever altered his victims’ lives and was only discovered when one of them bravely preserved evidence of his horrific conduct,” said U.S. Attorney Ashley C. Hoff. “While the impact to the victims in this case can never be undone, my hope is that the lengthy prison sentence assists in their healing process while serving to further protect our community.”

Sheeds was a trucker of more than 30 years having racked up over 3.5 million safe driving miles.

He has been awarded with a series of industry honors such as being named a 2015 Travel Centers of America (TA) Citizen Driver and recognized by Pilot-Flying J as a Road Warrior in 2017.

Following his arrest, both truck stop giants along with Werner and ATA scrubbed any mention of Sheeds from their websites.
