Investigation Ongoing After Trucker Killed in Loading Dock Accident

Hillsborough, NC – A 50-year-old truck driver died on Tuesday after being fatally struck by a big rig at a North Carolina loading dock.

According to a release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the fatal incident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. at the ABB, Inc. manufacturing facility located at 6801 Industrial Dr. in Mebane.

ABB is a leading global technology company headquartered in Zurich Switzerland which specializes in automation, robotics and heavy electrical equipment.

A witness reported that Eugene Early “Mac” McDowell IV, from Eden, NC, backed his truck into the loading dock and exited his vehicle.

A second truck then struck McDowell as it backed into the bay next to him, OCSO investigators said.

First responders including the Orange County EMS attempted to save McDowell’s life and administered CPR and “other medical interventions,” OCSO indicated.

However, McDowell succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the rig that struck McDowell was not immediately identified by authorities.

The incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
