LAPD’s Bomb Squad Semi Explodes While Loaded With 5,000 Pounds of Illegal Fireworks

Los Angeles, CA – Over 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks detonated on Wednesday resulting in a massive explosion and injuries to 17 people.

Videos of the crazy explosion quickly went viral on social media Wednesday evening leaving people with many unanswered questions.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the Bomb Squad seized illegal home-made and China-manufactured pyrotechnics from a home in the area of 27th Street and San Pedro at approximately 12:00 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a tip.

Reports from those on the scene indicated some of the fireworks appeared to be large mortar-sized devices used for commercial purposes.

The LAPD said officials loaded the explosives into its Bomb Squad big rig’s containment unit as a “precautionary measure.”

However, things went horribly wrong when the vehicle exploded, sending debris flying and damaging nearby homes, cars and local businesses.

Numerous local media reports indicated no one was inside the semi-truck at the time of the detonation.

Officials confirmed at least 17 people suffered injuries including ten LAPD members.

All are expected to survive.

The LAPD said it is “unknown” why the fireworks detonated and an investigation is ongoing.

However, an LAPD detective spoke with a Los Angeles Times reporter on the scene before the explosion.

She indicated a “small amount of unstable, improvised explosive type fireworks” would be blown up at the site because they were “too unstable to move.”
