Man Crushed to Death by Semi-Truck While Filling Flat Tire
Bexar County, TX – A man was crushed to death by a big rig on Monday in what investigators are describing as a freak accident.
The deadly incident took place around 9 a.m. Monday near the 12900 block of Highway 90 in San Antonio.
Officials from Bexar County Sheriff’s Office arrived to the scene to find the male victim deceased near a Peterbilt truck.
A preliminary investigation revealed the victim was using a hose on the parked Peterbilt to pump air into a flat tire on a front loader at the scene when the semi inexplicably began to roll.
Investigators said the man attempted to move out of the big rig’s path but fell in the process.
The semi rolled over him, killing him at the scene.
Peter Zamora spoke with local outlet KSAT at the scene and told reporters he “rushed” to the site after getting a call about the accident.
Zamora said he works for the same company as the victim.
A BCSO official confirmed to KSAT the victim was a crew worker.
According to Zamora, their company was hauling dirt to and from the location where the incident took place.
Both Zamora and BCSO said the victim was not the truck driver.
Investigators do not believe anyone was inside the truck at the time of the accident.
The USDOT number listed on the side of the Peterbilt belongs to San Antonio based Hanks Transport, LLC.
According to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s SAFER Web, Hanks Transport employs four drivers and operates four trucks.
While officials have not released the victim’s identity, friends and family on social media have identified him as Joe Villarreal of San Antonio.
