Mexican Trucker Caught Smuggling $8.4 MILLION Load With a Hint of Lime
Otay Mesa, CA – A Mexican trucker was arrested last week at the Otay Mesa Cargo port of entry after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered a bit more than a shipment of limes.
The seizure occurred on Monday, June 4 at approximately 4 p.m.
CBP reports officers encountered a 74-year-old male Mexican citizen driving a tractor pulling a trailer carrying a shipment of limes.
A CBP officer referred the truck and shipment for a more in-depth examination.
CBP officers then conducted a search of the trailer.
They quickly identified “anomalies” within the boxes of limes before a CBP officer extracted a “green leafy substance” from one of the boxes.
The specimen field-tested positive for marijuana.
Officers discovered 468 large wrapped packages containing more than 11,000 lbs. of marijuana, with a street value of approximately $8.4 million.
CBP officers seized the tractor, trailer, cargo shipment and marijuana.
The driver was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.
Last month, a U.S. trucker caught transporting 30 lbs. of narcotics in his semi-truck admitted he was being paid over $13,000 for the transport.
