Questions Remain About Cause Of Crash That Killed 53-Year-Old Trucker

Roanoke County, Virginia – A truck driver was killed in a single vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon along northbound I-81.

Virginia State Police (VSP) have now identified the driver as Joseph Daniel McDowell, 53, of Richmond. VSP said in a release that the crash happened at 3:11 p.m. on the north side of 81 at the 140.5 mile marker. Officials said McDowell was traveling north when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway and over an embankment.

Police confirmed McDowell was wearing his seatbelt and was not ejected from the vehicle. There were no passengers.

The truck was hauling wood products. Emergency clean up crews were also called to the scene due to a fuel leak after the crash.
