New Aerial Video of Massive Pileup on I-94 is Staggering

Jackson County, WI – It took emergency crews almost 24 hours to clear a stretch of Interstate 94 after a pileup of several dozen vehicles including big rigs on Thursday.

According to Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP), freezing rain caused “icy and hazardous road conditions” on eastbound I-94 leading to “a number of crashes/run-offs between mile markers 37-97” in Dunn, Eau Claire, Trempeleau, and Jackson Counties.

An initial multi-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. on the east and westbound lanes of I-94 near mile marker 96.

This resulted in a big rig catching on fire and coming to rest in the median with two passenger vehicles wedged underneath which caused further crashes and spin-offs, officials said.

“Thankfully, there were no fatalities and all other reported injuries appear to be non-life threatening,” WSP said in an update on Thursday afternoon.

Having reported on similar pileups for years now, it’s perhaps a Christmas miracle no one was killed or even seriously injured.

Crews were able to reopen the right lanes of east and westbound I-94 by 8:30 p.m.

In an update on Friday at 4:20 a.m., WSP indicated all lanes were again open and all vehicles had been cleared from the scene.

Images and videos of the scene were quickly shared on social media by WSP, witnesses and passersby.

Aerial drone video which gives an even broader view of the devastation has also now been made available.
