New Details Emerge in the Murder of Truck Driver Making a Delivery in Memphis
Memphis, TN – New details are emerging about a truck driver who was brutally murdered while making a delivery to a Memphis, TN restaurant early Monday morning.
While police in Memphis have yet to identify the victim of this week’s shooting, Transportation Nation Network (TNN) has learned the deceased is Paragould, AR resident Chayne Cardwell, age 44.
Cardwell was a driver for Performance Food Group (PFG) and making deliveries for the company at the time of his death.
The fatal incident unfolded in the early morning hours on Monday at Jack Pirtle’s Chicken, located at 1217 South Bellevue Boulevard.
Authorities with the Memphis Police Department (MPD) said officers arrived to the scene to discover a truck driver with “multiple gunshot wounds.”
He was declared dead a short time later.
Restaurant Owner Issues Statement Thanking Truck Drivers
On Tuesday, the owner of Jack Pirtle’s, Tawanda Pirtle, issued a statement regarding the shooting.
“I am still trying to put words together,” she wrote in a social media post. “But tears still fills [sic] my eyes with hurt in my heart for the loss of a husband and father that was just doing his job early yesterday morning.”
Pirtle made clear the restaurant has never experienced anything like Monday’s incident in the company’s 64 year history, calling it “a first.”
She asked for thoughts and prayers for Cardwell’s family, co-workers, PFG family, and “every delivery driver in the city of Memphis.”
“These folks can NEVER EVER be appreciated enough for the job they do that truly connects to every person and every business and every household,” she wrote of truck drivers.
In her post, Pirtle made mention of video footage of the deadly incident captured by security cameras at the restaurant.
“I don’t even know why I am saying this but at this point and time with so much going on in Memphis and the entire world, I think it needs to be said,” she prefaced.
Pirtle then went on to describe the truck driver — who she did not mention by name — was a “white middle-age gentleman.”
She also noted that the “shooter seems to be a white young man.”
A spokesperson for MPD told TNN on Tuesday no further information about the incident is available at this time.
As of publishing of TNN’s original story on the shooting on Monday, the suspect was still at-large.
Chayne Cardwell Remembered
Scores of posts about Cardwell filled social media as news of his death began circulating.
Luther Brown, a former co-worker of Cardwell from 2014-2015, told TNN he was “a great guy” and a “hardworking family man.”
“[He] always had a smile on his face and always just an all-around good friend, father, husband, and co-worker,” Brown recalled.
“It makes me sick that this happened to him when he was just trying to make a living,” he stated.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Cardwell’s family to assist with expenses following his untimely death.
Cardwell leaves behind a wife, four children, two grandchildren (with two more on the way), parents, siblings and countless other family and friends.
