Over 1,400 International Trucks Recalled Due to Risk of Unintended Braking

Lisle, IL – Navistar, Inc. has issued a recall of over 1,400 International trucks for separate issues.

Navistar reported both recalls to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Friday, April 9.

Both have since been posted to NHTSA’s website.

In total, the two recalls affect approximately 1,460 units.

Recall #1: Retainer Not Properly Seated

The first recall affects certain 2021 International LT, RH, MV and HV vehicles equipped with Bendix pressure switches.

According to Navistar, a retainer was not properly seated in the SC-3 single check valve.

Thus, it may not provide source air isolation when pressure is applied.

The unintended spring brake application that may occur as a result increase the risk of a crash.

Approximately 845 units are affected.

Navistar will notify owners, and dealers will replace the SC-3 check valves, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin May 31, 2021.

Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1 (800) 448-7825.

Navistar’s number for this recall is 21503.

Recall #2: Air Leak in Spring Brake Chamber

The second recall affects certainly 2021 International LT and RH vehicles.

According to Navistar, the spring inside the spring brake chamber may allow the pressure plate to shift and wear a hole through the diaphragm, causing an air leak.

The leak could subsequently cause the parking brake to engage, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

Approximately 615 units are potentially impacted, Navistar reported to NHTSA.

Navistar identified Meritor as the manufacturer of the affected component.

Navistar said its Field Service team was first alerted to the issue on January 6, 2021 by an unidentified customer.

The company will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace the spring brake chambers, free of charge.
