Police Believe Truck Driver Took His Own Life Inside Of His Truck
Hanover County, Virginia – Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating the death of a truck driver after he was found deceased inside of his truck parked along the shoulder of Interstate 95 on Wednesday morning.
VSP said troopers were called to mile marker 91.7, near the Route 54 exit, of southbound I-95 just after 10 a.m.
They found a Swift tractor-trailer parked on the right shoulder and the male driver dead inside, according to investigators.
Numerous reports from local media who were on the scene indicate the driver’s side window was shattered.
However, police indicated it did not appear the window had been shot out.
Investigators were observed walking into the nearby wooded area to search for any clues.
VSP said the death does not appear to be “suspicious.”
Additional published reports indicate police believe the driver took his own life in what they are describing as an “unattended death.”
In a statement from VSP a spokesperson said,
“The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office is assisting in the investigation into the death of an adult male. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy and examination. At this stage of the investigation, the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.”
The identity of the deceased truck driver has not yet been released.
Traffic was backed up for almost 5 miles until approximately 2 p.m. when lanes were re-opened.
The investigation is ongoing.
