Police Identify Man Tragically Struck and Killed by Big Rig at Truck Stop Fuel Island
Hubbard, OH — An Illinois man killed after being struck by a big rig at an Ohio truck stop on Tuesday morning has been identified.
Officials with the Hubbard Township Police Department (HTPD) revealed the victim was 65-year-old Wieslaw M. Wieczorek, of Palatine, IL.
Wieczorek is believed to have been a trucker, though investigators have yet to officially confirm it.
As Transportation Nation Network (TNN) reported, the fatal incident unfolded around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Love’s located at 2586 North Main Street in Hubbard.
Officials said the driver of a tractor-trailer — whose identity has not yet been released — called 9-1-1 upon realizing he had struck someone with his truck at a fuel island.
“It was more than likely an accident,” said Hubbard Township Police Patrolman Christopher Gifford told WFMJ. “But I mean, obviously we’re gonna look at all the avenues,” he said.
No charges have been filed as of yet, Gifford told WFMJ, and the driver is cooperating with officials.
An investigation is ongoing by the Hubbard Township police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
