Questions Swirling After Truck Driver Is Brutally Shot Dead In Michigan Neighborhood

“My husband heard the semi pull-up, and then he heard people yelling and he heard them saying, ‘what are we going to do? what are we going to do?’ – Kelli Salinas, neighborhood resident

Flowerfield Township, Michigan – A 42-year-old truck driver was shot dead in a residential area in St. Joseph County in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 15.

St. Joseph County Undersheriff Mark Lillywhite told assembled media that authorities received a disturbance call at 3:06 a.m. after neighbors heard shouting and gunshots. Officers were dispatched to the scene on Flowerfield Road in Flowerfield Township to find the truck driver with a bullet wound in his chest. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Lillywhite.

Kelli Salinas lives a door down from the crime scene and she tells WSBT 22 that her husband heard quite a commotion and called the police. “My husband heard the semi pull-up, and then he heard people yelling and he heard them saying, ‘what are we going to do? what are we going to do?’ and by that time he had already called 911,” she said. “It’s scary, it’s sad, it’s ugly.”

Lillywhite says they are investigating this as a homicide and area already tracking leads. He would not release the name of the semi-truck driver or disclose any information as to why authorities believe the truck driver was parked in a residential area at this time. He did confirm the victim did not live near the scene of the crime. Lillywhite would also not pinpoint whether the trucker was found inside of his truck, on the ground near his truck or inside of a residence.

Police Have Now Released The Identity Of The Trucker Who They Say Was Murdered In Michigan

Making matters more difficult for investigators are the elements Lillywhite says. It has been snowing and that can slow the investigation down. “They have to take some extra steps to maintain and preserve the evidence,” said Lillywhite.

Lillywhite was quick to calm resident’s fears by pointing out, “This isn’t common for this area.” He did add another interesting piece to this developing story and that is he said police have had numerous run-ins with people at the property where the shooting took place. He said they believe they know who is involved, but would not go further than that at this time.
