Risk of Engine Stall and ‘Clutch Disengagement’ Prompts Recall of Freightliner and Western Star Trucks

Portland, OR – Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) has issued a recall of over 11,000 Freightliner and Western Star trucks for separate issues.

DTNA reported the recalls to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday, March 24.

Both have since been posted to NHTSA’s website.

Recall #1: Clutch Flange May Break

The first DTNA recall affects 2021 Freightliner Cascadias and 2021 Western Star 4700s.

The total number of trucks affected is 6,105.

According to DTNA, certain trucks built between July 8 and December 14, 2020 may result in clutch damper failure at low miles.

The flange failure may cause loose parts to fall into the clutch pressure plate assembly and potentially affect clutch disengagement.

According to DTNA, this may cause the vehicle to lurch and cause unexpected vehicle movement, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the clutch on the affected vehicles, free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin May 22, 2021.

Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1 (800) 547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-881.

Recall #2: Undersized Ground Wire May Cause Engine Stall

The second recall affects 2019-2021 Western Star 4700s and 5700s.

The ground harness wiring in affected trucks may be undersized and may cause a connector to melt, DTNA stated.

As a result, damage to the ground harness may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

DTNA reported 5,111 affected units.

DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ground harness, free of charge.

This recall is also expected to begin May 22, 2021.

Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1 (800) 547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-880.
