Semi-Jacking Leads To Fatal Shooting
Phoenix, Arizona – A man who stole a semi Thursday afternoon in the Phoenix area is dead after police shot him following a stand off in a residential area.
Police say the now deceased suspect approached a truck driver in a business parking lot near 35th Avenue and Thomas Road, pointed an AR-15 rifle at the driver and demanded he get out of the truck. The truck driver did as he was instructed and the suspect then drove the truck to a residential neighborhood and parked.
Once there, the armed suspect began pointing the rifle at people on the neighborhood streets and even walking through backyards threatening people. Tactical teams responded to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. Upon arriving they instructed the gunman in both English and Spanish to drop his weapon, but the gunman refused.
After a standoff ensued, police say the gunman turned his back to officers and appeared to reach into his waistband. At that point an officer fired one round striking the suspect. A police K-9 then helped officers apprehend the gunman before anyone else was hurt.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, but we do know he was 46 years old. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Investigators determined that the suspect had several magazines with live ammunition, an AR-15 magazine and several long knives.
No possible motive has yet been given for the actions of the suspect. The fatal incident is still under investigation.
