Semi Runs Over Police Deputy While He Was Clearing Big Rig Rollover Crash

Laketown Canyon, Utah – A semi-truck was traveling westbound on Highway 30 in Laketown Canyon on Tuesday when it struck a Rich County deputy.

According to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), a semi traveling eastbound, and too fast for the icy and snowy conditions, jackknifed and rolled at approximately 10:32 a.m. on Tuesday. Troopers with UHP and the Rich County Police Department were dispatched to the scene.

Officials say as the UHP officer was assisting the driver of the rolled semi the Rich County deputy, who was positioned just east of the crash location at a runaway truck ramp along the grade, was struck by a big rig traveling westbound.

Authorities say the westbound semi lost control coming down the grade, struck the officer, then continued on missing the truck ramp before striking the rocks along the side of the roadway.

The deputy who was struck was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The second semi-driver was also transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials say the canyon was shut down in both directions for a time while they cleared the scene. The investigation into both accidents is ongoing.
