Senate Majority Leader Visits Kentucky Trucking Company To Promote CARES Act

Bowling Green, KY – Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell paid a visit to a Kentucky trucking company last week.

Local outlet WBKO reported Senator McConnell spoke to a small group at Bowling Green, KY-based Taz Trucking on Thursday, September 3, in relation to the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

The CARES Act is a $2.2 trillion economic stimulus bill that was signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on March 27, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to McConnell, Taz was a recipient of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Taz is among the recipients of $62.4 million in CARES Act funding given to Warren County businesses, McConnell stated.

“This is the best example of exactly what we hoped to achieve,” McConnell said to the crowd.

As Transportation Nation Network (TNN) reported in July, a report from the Small Business Administration (SBA) revealed a total of 3,205 long-haul trucking companies in the country received a PPP loan of $150,000 or more.

A total of 33 trucking companies received between $5 million and $10 million in PPP loans.

The amount of funds given to Taz was not disclosed.

The Senator reiterated that businesses which follow PPP criteria, including using a certain percentage of the funds for payroll purposes, do not have to repay the loan.

Taz was founded in 2004 by Bosnian immigrant Tahir Zukic.

“It is one of the greatest honors of my life to introduce Senator Mitch McConnell,” Zukic said to a small group before McConnell spoke.

Data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) indicates Taz has 101 drivers and 112 power units.

The 78-year-old Senator has been married to United States Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao since 1993.

He has served as a U.S. senator from Kentucky since January 1985.

In 2010, OpenSecrets ranked McConnell one of the wealthiest members of the Senate, based on household net worth.
