SUV Crosses Median and Crashes Into Big Rig Killing Trucker
Hanover County, VA – A trucker died early Saturday morning after his big rig was struck by a crossover SUV along Interstate 95 in Virginia.
According to the Virginia State Police (VSP), the accident occurred at approximately 3:42 a.m. near mile marker 87 in Hanover County.
Investigators say a 1999 Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 37-year-old man from Midlothian, was traveling southbound when for unknown reasons it veered across the median and into the northbound lanes.
The driver of a northbound tractor-trailer was unable to avoid the SUV and the two vehicles collided.
“The adult male driver of the tractor-trailer lost control striking the guardrail and overturned,” a VSP spokesman said. “The tractor lost its load of boxed vegetables and has a diesel leak due to the damage.”
The trucker passed away at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
VSP has yet to release his identity.
The driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries and a passenger sustained serious injuries.
Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, VSP said.
Their conditions have not been updated by authorities.
All lanes were temporarily shut down as VSP investigators and first responders worked to clear the scene.
VSP says its investigation is ongoing.
