Truck Driver And 12 Chinese Nationals Apprehended In Human Smuggling Bust
Edinburg, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol recently discovered twelve Chinese nationals in an attempted big rig human smuggling operation along the southern border.
Officials said that on Friday, June 7, a tractor-trailer seeking to pass through the Falfurrias, Texas checkpoint was referred for a secondary inspection after a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to the trailer.
During the inspection, agents discovered 12 Chinese nationals attempting to conceal themselves within the cargo.
Agents then escorted all the subjects into the checkpoint and arrested the driver and passenger, according to U.S. Border Patrol officials.
According to U.S. Border Patrol, human smuggling is increasing along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Just in the last month alone agents have disrupted and uncovered numerous other smuggling attempts in big rigs.
In one such attempt agents discovered 120 people packed inside a trailer.
Marcizo Ramos, special operations supervisor with the Laredo Sector, recently told Transportation Nation Network (TNN) the “humanitarian crisis” is worsening and human smuggling operators are taking full advantage of it.
“The smuggling organizations are constantly changing their strategies,” Ramos said. “We are continuing to be vigilant and we will do everything possible to ensure to prevent cases like these.”
