Truck Driver Arrested After 75 ‘Shivering’ Illegal Migrants Discovered in Refrigerated Trailer
Edinburg, TX — A truck driver was arrested last week after dozens of illegal migrants were discovered locked inside the refrigerated trailer he was hauling.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), on Wednesday, October 27, Falfurrias Border Patrol Station agents working at the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint conducted an immigration inspection on the driver of a tractor-trailer.
A CBP canine alerted to the refrigerated trailer — which was loaded with pallets of flour — as officials questioned the driver about his citizenship, CBP said.
During a secondary exam, agents opened the trailer doors and discovered 75 illegal migrants.
CBP reported the individuals were “shivering” and “attempting to stay warm” as the trailer’s refrigerator was set to 58 degrees Fahrenheit at the time.
Further, officials said the doors were padlocked shut from the outside ensuring those inside could not “escape without someone opening the doors from the outside.”
The illegal migrants were taken into custody and all determined to be citizens from Central America and Mexico.
CBP stated each person was medically screened and no one required further medical attention.
The truck driver was placed under arrest.
He was not identified as an investigation remains ongoing.
