Truck Driver Arrested in Big Rig Human Smuggling Bust

Sierra Blanca, TX — A truck driver was arrested last weekend after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents discovered dozens of illegal migrants hiding inside the tractor-trailer he was operating.

The human smuggling bust occurred on Saturday, October 23, at the Interstate 10 Immigration Checkpoint.

A CBP K-9 detection team conducting traffic operations alerted to the trailer of a big rig hauling crushed aluminum.

Agents then directed the vehicle to the secondary inspection lane where a further examination resulted in the discovery of 31 illegal migrants from Guatemala and Mexico.

According to CBP, they were “medically evaluated and processed accordingly.”

“The vigilance and teamwork displayed by agents and their K-9 partners saved multiple individuals from a potentially dangerous situation.” Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean L. McGoffin stated. “Transnational criminal organizations continue to expose undocumented migrants to unsafe conditions with little to no regard for their well-being.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer, who CBP did not identify, and three occupants, were turned over to Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office for prosecution.
