Truck Driver Crushed to Death While Attempting to Fix Flatbed Trailer
Sidney, OH – An Ohio man is dead after becoming trapped underneath a flatbed trailer hauling an oversized load in Ohio on Tuesday.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the accident took place around noon on September 15 in the 8000 block of Cisco Road in Sidney.
Authorities arrived to the scene to discover 24-year-old Evan Winner, of Sidney, OH, “wedged” underneath a flatbed trailer pulling an oversized load.
Winner was an employee of the Ted Winner Family Farm near Sidney and was hauling a large track hoe and several buckets directly before the incident.
SCSO Chief Deputy Jim Frye said it appeared “there was some sort of mechanical malfunction (with the trailer) that Winner was trying to either fix, or find out what was wrong.”
He exited the truck and positioned himself underneath the trailer.
However, investigators say the truck and trailer “started rolling backwards,” entrapping Winner.
According to a preliminary investigation, an air coupler for the trailer brakes became “partially uncoupled,” which prevented the trailer from moving from the middle of Cisco Road.

A tow truck was dispatched to the scene to remove the truck and trailer from the roadway.

According to Winner’s obituary, he was engaged to be married in January 2021.
