Truck Drivers Perish After Semis Collide In Fiery Head-On Crash
Hidalgo County, NM – Three people, including two truck drivers, perished in a fiery head-on collision along Interstate 10 at mile post 19 near Lordsburg on Sunday, March 24.
New Mexico State Police said at approximately 3:30 p.m. a 2015 Freightliner driven by Sean White, 50, of West Covina, CA, was traveling east on I-10 when for unknown reasons crossed the center median and collided head-on with a westbound 2013 Kenworth tractor-trailer operated by Jose Apodaca, 47, of El Paso.
The Freightliner’s trailer then hit a 1999 Dodge pickup that was also traveling west. Investigators said the driver of the pickup was a 51-year-old male along with two female passengers each believed to be from Arizona.
The pickup driver and one female passenger was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
The Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced both truck drivers, White and Apodaca, along with 47-year-old Susan Rojo of Sierra Vista, AZ, who was a passenger in the pickup, dead on the scene.
Investigators said their initial findings reveal alcohol is not believed to have contributed to the fatal crash.
The investigation continues with the assistance of the New Mexico State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit with no additional information currently available.
