Trucker Admits Guilt After Witnesses Say Body Parts Were Hanging Out of Trailer

San Antonio, TX — A trucker is facing up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to smuggling illegal migrants earlier this year.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), on March 22, 2021, Luis Enrique De La Cerda, 55, of El Indio, TX, was identified as the driver of a tractor-trailer traveling through Pearsall.

Court documents indicate witnesses reported seeing multiple body parts sticking out from the rear of the trailer, including the head of a male child.

The tractor, pulling a trailer branded with Laredo, TX-based Oak Truck Lines, parked in an abandoned parking lot near the outskirts of town where De La Cerda opened the rear trailer door.

People then began streaming out of the trailer and it was all caught on camera.

De La Cerda, as well as 69 illegal migrants, including five unaccompanied minors, were detained on the scene by officers with Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Department of Public Safety and the Pearsall Police Department.

Investigators said many complained of difficulty breathing due to no ventilation and hot temperatures inside the trailer.

On Thursday, December 2, De La Cerda pleaded guilty to one count of transporting illegal aliens.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 9, 2022.
