Trucker Arrested After Leaving Path of Destruction at Hotel
Knoxville, TN – Police say a trucker panicked before leaving a path of destruction at a hotel in Knoxville Sunday morning.
Police were called to the Rodeway Inn Hotel on Brakebill Road at approximately 4:30 a.m. after a semi-truck driver drove through the parking lot smashing cars, knocking over light poles and eventually bringing down the canopy hanging over the hotel’s front entrance.
According to investigators, Raul Medina, 34, of Kissimmee, Florida, was behind-the-wheel of the big rig and said he was tired and looking for a place to park when he pulled into the hotel parking lot.
Hotel guests who witnessed the incident told local news outlet ABC 6 that they couldn’t believe what happened next.
“He hit the pole, went over the rock garden, hit two vehicles, continued, made the turn, and then hit the hotel. He took out columns, crashed the roof, and kept on going,” said hotel guest Gene Pauldine.
Pauldine’s vehicle was one of the two damaged in the incident, according to police.
Investigators say Medina freaked out after the big rig slammed into the canopy and he then began backing the rig up.
The trailer then slammed into a light pole, so Medina pulled forward again.
Witnesses say Medina then backed up once more sending the canopy crashing down.
“The driver did not stop, he kept backing up and going forward, thinking he could get her through there,” hotel guest Troy Geiser told ABC 6.
“He hit the pole with the rear of the trailer, and then backed up and hit her again,” Geiser recalled.
Thankfully, no one was injured.
Following the crash Medina was taken into police custody and charged with DUI.
