Trucker Falls 30 Feet Down Manhole Behind Love’s Travel Stop Requiring Dramatic Rescue

Houston, Texas – A truck driver fell 20 to 30 feet down into a manhole in a wooded area behind a Love’s Travel Stop setting into motion what was a dramatic rescue effort by emergency crews Tuesday morning.

Police say around 1:30 a.m. a truck driver was walking in a wooded area behind the truck stop in northwest Houston off of I-45 when he dropped his cell phone. When he reached down to pick it up he went tumbling 20 to 30 feet down into the sewer.

Another driver witnessed the victim fall and according to police immediately alerted authorities for help.

Rescue crews descended onto the scene with well more than a dozen police and firefighters responding. As truckers, and emergency crew workers looked on a firefighter was lowered down to retrieve the fallen trucker. Dramatic video of the rescue effort is below.

Officials say the trucker suffered a few broken bones and is recovering in a nearby hospital. The manhole has since been boarded up to prevent anyone else from experiencing the same fate.

However, it wasn’t long before the fallout from the accident began. People on social media are already demanding the truck stop be held liable for the fall. It will be interesting to see how this story develops in the coming days and weeks.

Officials have not released the name of the driver at this time.
