Trucker Hauling Chickens Falls Asleep Then Falls Off Of Bridge

Stark County, Ohio – A truck driver fell asleep moments before he lost control of his semi-truck and crashed into a guardrail and off a bridge Friday morning along U.S. Route 30.

According to the Ohio Highway Patrol (OHP), a crash involving a semi hauling 8,000 chickens happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. on the Pigeon Run bridge along eastbound U.S. Route 30.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the Volvo semi-truck hanging off of the bridge and the load of chickens crashed onto Pigeon Run Avenue SW below.

The truck driver was alert, but trapped inside the semi, according to Brewster Fire Department Captain Scott Borojevich.

After assessing the situation officials determined the driver could be safely extricated with a ladder.

He was able to exit the cab with help from Brewster Fire Department personnel.

According to officials, he was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for an undetermined number of chickens.

Authorities said it is not known how many chickens died.

However, the chickens that survived being thrown from their crates reportedly huddled together on the roadway.

Clean up crews worked “a few hours” to clear the scene according to a Brewster Fire Department Facebook post.
