Trucker Hauling Hydraulic Dump Trailer Arrested in Human Smuggling Attempt
Salton City, CA – A trucker was arrested last week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at the El Centro Sector in yet another big rig human smuggling attempt.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 5 at approximately 7 a.m., when a man driving a semi tractor-trailer hauling a hydraulic dump trailer approached the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint.
CBP reports that while Border Patrol agents conducted an immigration check on the driver during primary inspection, a Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the cargo area of the trailer, which was covered with a tarp.
The driver was referred to secondary for further inspection.
Agents inspected the cargo area of the tractor-trailer and discovered six illegal aliens concealed under the tarp.
Welfare checks were conducted on each of the individuals and all six were repatriated to Mexico.
The truck driver, a 46-year-old United States citizen, was arrested.
CBP did not identify him, but said he would be charged with Alien Smuggling.
Further, CBP has recently alerted the public to an alarming rise in big rig human smuggling attempts along the Southern border.
In fact, just in the last few weeks, multiple big rig human smuggling operations have been thwarted.
CBP says that despite the unprecedented cross-border travel restrictions and additional security measures, human smugglers are not slowing down.
“The men and women of the Border Patrol will continue to do a great job combating human smuggling,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino. “These high temperatures place people attempting to enter illegally into the United States in great danger, and these smugglers will continue to use dangerous tactics with no remorse. Agents will remain vigilant and continue to target these dangerous human smuggling attempts.”
