Trucker in Critical Condition After Semi-Tanker Overturns and Rips Down Traffic Sign
DeKalb County, GA – A trucker is in critical condition after the semi-tanker he was driving overturned and ripped down a large sign on Interstate 285 on Monday.
According to the DeKalb County Police Department (DCPD), the accident happened around 10 a.m. Monday in the southbound lanes of I-285, near the Ponce de Leon exit between Church Street and Memorial Drive.
Officials have not released specific details as to what caused the accident, but photos from the scene reveal a tanker truck — which was hauling fuel — overturned near the shoulder of the interstate.
“The accident caused a highway sign to fall, which is causing major delays,” DCPD posted on its social media about an hour and a half after the accident.
Officials said traffic is being diverted onto E. Ponce de Leon Ave. towards Glendale Rd. and down Northern Ave.
“Once on Memorial Dr., traffic can re-enter I-285 SB,” DCPD stated.
A spokesperson with the DeKalb Fire Department (DFD) confirmed the male trucker was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
FOX5 Atlanta reported the driver was able to escape the truck following the accident.
No further details have been released about the driver.
DFD stated thousands of gallons of fuel from the tanker spilled into the roadway as a result of the crash.
“He’s really lucky that it didn’t explode because he was carrying 7,500 gallons of diesel fuel,” DFD Chief Kenneth McKinney said.
