Trucker Justified in Killing Man Who Attempted to Break Into His Big Rig, Police Say
Ringgold, LA – A trucker shot and killed a man in self-defense on Sunday after a break-in attempt on his semi-truck.
According to Bienville Parish Sheriff John Balance, the deadly scene unfolded around 5 a.m. at Pot Luck & Liquor, located at 3948 U.S. Highway 371 in Ringgold, which is located approximately 35 miles southeast of Shreveport.
The trucker — who was not identified by authorities — received permission from the liquor store to park there overnight.
In the early morning hours, he was awakened by a man, later identified as 35-year-old Jonathan Raney of Ringgold, trying to break the driver’s side window of the truck.
The driver told authorities he instructed Raney to stop, but he responded by moving to the passenger side of the truck.
Raney then “grabbed the outside rearview mirror and was hanging on it in attempt to kick in the window,” according to Sheriff Ballance.
The trucker, fearing for his life, took his firearm and fired four shots at Raney, striking him.
Raney was taken to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
It was discovered prior to his attempts to break into the big rig, Raney had broken the glass door of Pot Luck & Liquor.
According to authorities, the driver was questioned and released.
Sheriff Ballance stated the shooting appeared to be justified.
Toxicology results are pending on Raney to determine if he was under the influence at the time of the attempted break-ins and shooting.
