Trucker Perishes After Crashing Into Disabled Big Rig Parked On Bridge
Ann Arbor, Michigan – A truck driver lost his life early Monday morning after rear-ending a tractor-trailer parked along the side of a bridge in Michigan.
According to Michigan State Police (MSP), a tractor-trailer had become disabled and parked along the side of the Huron River bridge on eastbound M-14 near Barton Drive at approximately 4:30 a.m. when another big rig plowed into its rear.
The second semi, which was hauling auto parts, rolled over onto its side and burst into flames, according to investigators.
MSP said when emergency responders arrived to the scene they found the driver of the second truck deceased.
Officials said the deceased driver is from Canada, but have not yet released his identity.
The driver of the first semi only reported minor injuries.
Multiple local news outlets are reporting numerous other passenger vehicles were damaged in chain reaction crashes.
However, no additional serious injuries have yet been reported.
Investigators also said the crash created a challenge for clean up crews because diesel fuel was leaking into the Huron River below.
Hazmat crews worked all day with a boom to capture as much fuel as they could.
In addition, officials said the location of the crash caused major traffic backups and presented significant challenges for first responders.
“Access was a big issue, of course, because it was on a bridge deck so our vehicles had to make a turnaround and come back to the incident,” Ann Arbor Township Fire Chief Mark Nicholai told local news outlet WDIV.
“We were able to get control of the fire pretty quickly, if you will. Unfortunately there was a deceased party in there, and so it became basically trying to protect the environment,” said Nicholai.
It is unclear what caused the initial tractor-trailer to become disabled and what led to the deceased driver crashing into the parked semi.
Transportation Nation Network will continue to monitor updates from authorities about their ongoing investigation.
