Trucker Perishes In Multiple Big Rig Crash After Swerving To Avoid 4-Wheeler

Henrico, Virginia – A truck driver perished in a crash involving two tractor-trailers along I-64 on Wednesday afternoon.

Virginia State Police say the driver of a Volvo semi was hauling an empty trailer headed eastbound on I-64 in the right lane when at approximately 12:30 p.m. changed to the center lane.

“At that time another vehicle was slowing in front of him,” Virginia State Police said in a news release Wednesday afternoon. “To avoid hitting that vehicle, the driver locked his breaks forcing the trailer to jack-knife to the left and the cab of the truck striking the bridge pillars.”

A second tractor-trailer was traveling in the left lane.

The driver, Burkhon Yusubov, tried to avoid colliding with the Volvo, but was unable. “He (Volvo) just jack-knifed and dragged me to the left with him and we hit the bridge,” Yusubov told local news outlet NBC12.

Yusubov, who was driving a Freightliner and hauling a 14,000-pound load of air-conditioning parts, was miraculously uninjured. “I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he commented.

The cab of Yusubov’s truck came to rest pinned under the Volvo. “I saw that the windshield was on my head and I was just hoping I could open my eyes again,” he said.

Emergency crews worked to extricate the driver of the Volvo who was trapped inside.

Rescuers used heavy equipment in an effort to cut an opening in the wreckage to free the truck driver.

Unfortunately, the driver, whose identity has not yet been released by authorities, was pronounced dead on the scene.

“I’m just very sorry,” Yusobov said.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
