Trucker Runs Over Man “Hiding” Under Semi in Walmart Lot, Investigation Ongoing

Rockford, IL – Police in Illinois are investigating an early morning incident after a man was struck and killed by a semi-truck in a Walmart parking lot.

The deadly incident occurred around 4 a.m. at the Walmart located at 7219 Walton Street in Rockford.


According to local outlet WIFR, officers from the Rockford Police Department (RPD) responded to reports of a man hit by a vehicle.

Responding officers believe the victim was “hiding” underneath a parked semi in the Walmart parking lot.

At this time, authorities believe the victim may have been seeking refuge from rain or sleeping underneath the truck.

RPD says the driver of the truck was unaware there was a man underneath the semi and fatally struck the man as he attempted to move the big rig.


The Rockford Scanner reported the incident occurred near the lawn and garden area of the parking lot.

Authorities described the victim as a 59-year-old Caucasian male.

His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Additionally, the name on the trucker has not been released by authorities.


Due to modified store hours as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the store was not scheduled to open until 7 a.m.

It was not immediately clear how long the truck had been parked in the Walmart lot.

Officials have not said if they plan on charging the trucker following the fatal accident.

Police remain on the scene investigating and are requesting the public avoid the area.
