Trucker Shot in Hotel Parking Lot While Working on Semi-Truck

Garden City, KS – A man was arrested for attempted first-degree murder after shooting a trucker who was working on his truck in a hotel parking lot this week.

According to the Garden City Police Department (GCPD), the incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. on Thursday at the Magnuson Hotel Red Baron, located at 2205 East Fulton Street in Garden City.

Officials say a trucker — whose identity was not revealed — was in the north parking lot of the hotel working on his semi-truck.

The man was approached by 47-year-old Clayton Mays, of Piedmont, MO, who allegedly had a handgun.

Mays fired multiple rounds according to the victim, with one striking him in the leg.

The shooter then fled the scene and the victim went to his hotel room inside the Magnuson to alert authorities.

GCPD officials arrived to the victim’s room to discover him with a gunshot wound to the lower leg.

Mays was located on the east side of the hotel according to police and subsequently arrested.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation, officials stated.

The trucker was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mays was booked into the Finney County Jail on an allegation of Attempted First Degree Murder.
