Trucker Suspected in Alleged Child Abduction Attempt at Truck Stop
Cedar City, UT – A truck driver is under investigation for allegedly trying to abduct the young daughter of another trucker at a travel center in Utah.
According to the Cedar City Police Department (CCPD), officers responded to an alleged attempted child abduction at the Love’s Travel Stop located on Canyon Ranch Drive in Cedar City on Tuesday evening.
Police said an 8-year-old girl was sitting inside her father’s semi-truck waiting for him to return from the truck stop with food just before 7 p.m.
The girl told police another man entered her dad’s semi from the driver’s side door and attempted to grab her.
Authorities said the girl kicked at the man and was able to escape through the passenger side door.
The alleged assailant also exited the truck and fled in an unknown direction.
Witnesses at the truck stop gave police a description of the man and the tractor-trailer he was driving and CCPD broadcast an attempt to locate.
A trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol located the semi on Interstate 15 near mile marker 13 in Washington County.
The suspect was arrested and transported to the Cedar City Police Department for questioning.
Authorities said the man, who’s identity has not been released, was interviewed by a detective subsequently released.
“With the investigation right now, we’re just sorting through all of our evidence, but due to the allegations and the seriousness of this crime, we want to make sure that we have everything in a row before we do anything,” CCPD Sgt. Clint Pollock said of the suspect’s release.
The incident remains under investigation.
CCPD said they are working with the Iron County Attorney’s Office on the case.
