Trucker’s Legs Severed in Chain Reaction Crash Involving Three Big Rigs
LaGrange County, IN – A 53-year-old trucker’s legs were severed in a chain reaction crash involving three big rigs late Friday afternoon in Indiana.
According to the Indiana State Police (ISP), the incident occurred just after 5 p.m. on the I-80/90 Toll Road near the 118mm, just west of Howe, IN.
Investigators identified truck driver Michael S. Lohman, 53, of Glendale, AZ, as having suffered critical injuries in the accident.
When ISP Troopers arrived to the scene they found that both of Lohman’s legs had been severed and he was also suffering from a severe head injury.
Troopers applied tourniquets to Lohman’s legs in order to control the bleeding prior to emergency medical personnel arriving.
Lohman was flown from the scene by helicopter to a hospital in Fort Wayne for critical care.
Lohman’s 12-year-old son was a passenger in the big rig and suffered minor injuries.
He was transported by ambulance to a hospital in LaGrange for medical evaluation, ISP said.
An ISP preliminary investigation revealed that at the time of the crash road construction was causing a traffic backup in the westbound lanes.
Lohman was driving an orange 2018 semi-tractor trailer westbound approaching the stopped traffic, when he failed to stop and collided into the rear of a yellow 2021 International (Penske) semi-truck driven by Ben Tehrani, 37, of Brentwood, CA.
Tehrani sustained minor injury to his neck and was also transported by ambulance to a hospital in LaGrange for evaluation.
A third commercial vehicle, a white 2013 Volvo semi-tractor trailer operated by Elvis Maksuti, 36, of Waukegan, IL, was also struck during the collision, ISP said.
Maksuti did not report any injuries.
An image from the scene provided by ISP revealed heavy damages to the big rigs and debris strewn across the westbound lanes of the interstate resulting in a blockage of all westbound lanes.
This crash remains under investigation by an ISP Crash Reconstruction Team.
Once the crash investigation is complete, it is expected that the full report will be turned over to the LaGrange County Prosecutor for review and determination of any charges to be filed.
